How to Spot a Locksmith Scam Before It Costs You

A too-cheap quote, a technician with no name and a drill in hand within minutes — locksmith scams follow a pattern. Learn the warning signs before you're the one standing locked out.

The bait price that never survives the job

The classic setup starts with an advertised price that sounds too good — a '$19 service call' or a lockout 'from $15'. That number covers almost nothing, and once the technician is standing at your door, the real price appears: drilling fees, 'high-security lock' surcharges, after-hours charges that were never mentioned. A legitimate locksmith quotes a clear service-call fee up front and explains what the job itself will cost before starting any work.

No name, no address, no accountability

Scam operators hide behind generic business names, call-centre numbers in another state, and listings with no local address. Before you book, check that the company has a real local presence, a consistent name and phone number, and a track record in your area. When the technician arrives, the name on the vehicle and on your invoice should match the company you actually called.

'We have to drill' — immediately

Drilling is a last resort, not an opening technique. A trained locksmith opens most standard home and car locks non-destructively, and will try those methods first. If drilling is the first and only suggestion — especially paired with pressure that a new, expensive lock is your only option — treat it as a warning sign. You are always entitled to a full explanation and a total price before any tool comes out.

How to protect yourself

The strongest protection is preparation: save the number of a local, licensed locksmith in your phone before you ever need one. When you do call, ask for the full price structure — the service call, the opening, and any likely extras. Pay by card where you can, and always get an invoice showing the company name, the work done and the amount. And if a price changes mid-job without a clear reason, you can stop the work; a professional will respect that.
