5 Signs It's Time to Upgrade Your Business Locks
Business locks fail quietly long before they fail completely. Five signs your commercial locks are overdue for attention — and what to do about each.
1. You can't account for your keys
Staff come and go, and keys don't always come back. If you don't know exactly how many keys exist for your premises and who holds them, your access control is an assumption, not a fact. A rekey restores control in one visit; a restricted keyway or a keypad system makes sure the problem never returns.
2. Locks stick, loosen or 'sometimes work'
A lock that needs jiggling is a lock in decline. In a business it also means staff prop doors open, share the one key that works, or leave the back door on the latch — all of which defeat the lock entirely. Repair or replace at the first sign, not after the failure locks you out on a Monday morning.
3. You've had a break-in — or an attempt
After any intrusion or attempt, locks and door hardware should be inspected and at minimum rekeyed, because you can't know whether keys were taken or copied. It's also the moment to review weak points: a standard cylinder on a glass storefront door is an invitation a high-security cylinder removes.
4. One key opens… everything, for everyone
If every employee's key opens every door, you don't have key control. A master key system gives you one key that opens all doors while each staff member's key opens only what their job requires — stockroom, office and till areas stay separated, and a lost key compromises one door, not the building.
5. Your locks predate your business
Inherited locks from a previous tenant carry the previous tenant's keys with them. Any change of occupancy should start with a full rekey or replacement, the same rule as a new home. If you've never deliberately chosen your business's locks, somebody else effectively chose them for you.
